Digital locks – digi locks and others

Digital locks, digi locks or push button locks which are also known as code locks in the UK, this is partly due to the fact that you input a code to open them and also because one of the leading brands in the UK is called Codelocks. They have many names but are they worth the investment?

What are digital locks?

An access control lock that allows any number of people access to a door or gate without the need to give them all keys. Digital locks do not usually require a power source. So are not susceptible to power outages.

The lock owner does not have to keep track of the amount of keys that have been issued or need to go to through expense of getting 100’s of keys cut plus a new one for each new user.

Prime examples of a place where a digi lock would be fitted in the workplace could be a server room, a cleaning cupboard or an area where personal data is stored under the Data Protection Act.

Domestic instances are garden gates and HMO’s (House in Multiple Occupation).

How do digital locks work?

Push button locks operate when the correct buttons are pushed in the proper sequence and the internal latch is retracted using the mechanical handle or by activating a battery driven motor.

Codes are set to a user defined set of numbers, digits or both, during installation. The norm is between 3 and 5 numbers / digits. For example, 1 2 3 4 # or 1 2 3. On lower security digi locks, the code is typed in using one digit at a time.

On higher end more expensive push button locks, digits may have to be keyed in simultaneously, depending on the wishes of the person setting the code.

This means a combination of 1, 2, 3 pushed individually would not open a lock that needed 1 and 2 pushed at the same time followed by 3. This increases the number of possible combinations exponentially, making digi locks a very safe and secure lock.

Digital lock history

Digital locks were invented in 1873 by James Sargent. This lock would only open at a preset time. He went on to create a lock that had an advanced time delay built in. It consisted of a keypad that the user had to insert a pin code, pretty much like the digi locks we see today.

This type of entry was not reliant on any type of power source, making it very effective for keyless entry. Digital locks in the modern world have changed slightly and can incorporate a battery pack that needs charging or changing. Meaning they do need a power source to operate.
