Lock Changes

A Simple guide

When people are asked what type of lock they would like changed, they often give the answer, the simple one. Other common answers are, you know the one with the Chubb key, the one that you have to lift up the handle, the one where you turn it. All very descriptive all very hard to offer a quote for.

Here we hope to give you a bit of a brief idea of what lock you may have in your doors, stopping people from taking your possessions. Getting the lock changes may be a bit easier. This is not a definitive guide and should not be used as such. Many of the locks shown are not insurance compliant (external link) and are shown just as a guide. Modern alternatives are available to conform to insurance standards, call us for a free no-obligation quote.

Common House Lock Identification

What lock do I have?

Yale rim cylinder

Rim cylinder/ night latch. Aka the Yale lock

If you have a wooden door and it more is than a few years old the chances are it is fitted with a rim cylinder lock /night latch combination and a mortice lock.

This lock is often referred to as the Yale or Bird lock, because for many years, most of them were made by either Yale or Bird (Wren).

Sash lock

5 lever mortice lock aka the Chubb lock

Owners of these type of lock tend to refer to them as the old type of lock or call them the type with the skeleton key or Chubb key.

The majority of lever locks are BS3621 2007 standard, especially when fitted to an exterior door. Interior doors also have mortice locks fitted but will not be British Standard. See this more detailed guide

Lock changes, Andover, Composite door mechanism

Multipoint Lock

These locks the ones most people describe as the ones where you have to lift the handles although even on these doors that is not necessarily true as some doors have wind mechanisms and others have self-locking mechanisms. They typically lock in at least 3 places.
These are found on all door material types, they typically have a euro cylinder in place to lock the whole mechanism.

American handles

Door knobset / American handles

Not as common here in the UK, although like many North American locks they are becoming more popular as tastes change. They are an ideal replacement for non locking latches and do look the part if installed correctly. A popular addition to the UK lock market.

Also available as levers/ handles. These are also available as keyless entry.

Assa Abloy cylinder

Assa Abloy/ Ruko, Scando
lock

Also known as a Scandinavian lock, these locks are being used more frequently in the UK now, they are becoming very popular on higher quality new builds for their security and longevity.
The keys are similar to the euro cylinder.
This lock is also known as an oval. Lock changes on this type of lock will require two separate locks.

ERA, high security dead lock, BS3621

ERA BS3621 high security rim cylinder and night latch

A modern upgrade to the night latch as shown above. Also available as a Yale product and others. BS3621 insurance approved.
These locks cannot be so easily by-passed as the less expensive type of rim and latch.

ERA Vectis

Multipoint lock. ERA Vectis

Not all multipoint door locks use a euro cylinder. This is a ERA Vectis, this locks with the ‘Chubb’ type or skeleton key as some call it. (picture courtesy ERA).
The Assa Abloy is also a multipoint lock, the cylinder may look similar to a ‘euro’ cylinder. However it is not.
